REVIEW: THE HAGGIS HORNS – KEEP ON MOVIN’
The Haggis Horns
Keep on Movin’
First Word Records
Keep on Movin’ is as smooth and tight as you’d expect from a band who’ve been building a reputation for their eight piece live shows for over five years. Like their Australian contemporaries The Bamboos, Scottish outfit The Haggis Horns aim for a classic funk and soul sound that tips its hat to contemporary sounds. And in this respect, this second studio album shows why The Haggis Horns have got deep funk legend Keb Darge’s seal of approval.
While tracks like album opener “Way of the Haggis” and “The Cockroach Grind” demonstrate that The Haggis Horns have got ears for driving rhythms, others like “On the Edge” and “Love Gets You High” ooze the kind of laid back smoothness that makes you think of putting your feet up on a lazy summer evening. The decision to build a track around Thundercats character Snarf aside, Keep on Movin’ is a class album that flows easily from beginning to end. Along with the previously mentioned Bamboos and the ever lengthening list of impressive sounds coming out of the Daptones label, The Haggis Horns show us that there’s still plenty to do and enjoy about the funk and soul genre.
