The Breakin’ Convention; The Seventh Annual International Festival of Hip-Hop Dance Theatre takes place at Sadler’s Wells, 1st May (until 3rd May).
Curated by Jonzi D,the line up for this kinetic event features global talent, including Japanese duo Hilty & Bosch, mad popper Mr Steen; Phax, whose ’animation skills’ have seen him labelled the slowest man on earth, France’s Pro-Phenomenon and Phase T, who reached the semi-finals of Battle of the Year in 2009, and more local b-boy moves from the likes of the Bad Taste Cru, performing Council of the Ordinary, that focuses on a homeless person’s daily experiences of the street and was first performed at the San Francisco Hip Hop Dance Fest in December 2009.
Time to reach for the shell toes and stretch those joints.

The Vauxhall Beatbox Championships are back, offering you the chance to win a brand new Vauxhall Corsa SXi. Beatboxer, to give the car urban bumps, presumably not included as part of the soundsystem.
Beatboxing is blossoming at the moment - something we explored in issue 03 with an exclusive interview Shlomo - and is hotbed of imaginative talent.
If you think you can follow previous winners including Beardyman and MC Zani, then pick-up-the-mic, if you can’t then go along and get a ringside seat at a set of nights than are guaranteed to go booooom.

The Old Sweet Shop has been a great supporter of Bonafide, stocking (and selling out) of the magazine. And it’s high time we returned the favour. An independent art space supporting a diverse array of local artists and product makers, make a bee-line for the gallery next time you are in the Steel city. You won’t be disappointed.
Their latest show stars artist and illustrator Lord Bunn who is showcasing his skills for the first time on a solo stage. Girls runs from the 13th January to the 23rd March.
Bunns. Girls. What a Carry on.

Guerilla Pop-Up Store, Noise Lab, flings open its doors this January. Located in Manchester city centre, the lab deviates from the usual pop-up store concept (which basically equates to stealth branding using DIY tools) in that it’s built to showcase artistic talents and hopefully direct some cash into their back pockets. A good thing in this rather grey financial climate.
Backed by the arts charity Noise Festival, the local council and a number of other philanthropic partners, Noise Lab is billed a ‘living magazine’ with each month a ‘Guest Editor’ curating content, events, gigs, workshops and much more. Manchester street artist Doodlebug is the first Editor and has plucked a unknown art headz of the street to present their work alongside their work and talent next to recognised and established names such as Mr Scruff, Pete Fowler Monsterism and Mark Wigan. It looks ‘monster’, as Eric Hall used to say and well worth checking out.
Bonafide will be representing at Noise Lab with copies of the magazine available to fondle before purchase. Hopefully we’ll also be getting involved in putting on a special event or two. Watch this space.

Yes you read it right folks, the metal faced maverick of rap is set to return to our fair isles (he was born here, you should know this) for his first ever European show. The performance takes place as part of ‘A Taste Of Sonar’ at Camdens Roundhouse on the 5th & 6th March alongside Laurent Garnier and other guests (tbc), in a taster of the seminal Catalonia based electronic music festival, Sonar.
Details are a little sketchy at this stage but here’s the official statement from Sonar press…
On 5th and 6th March, Sonar will offer a new “Taste of Sonar” at the Roundhouse in Camden, in London.
It will be two nights to savour in pure Sonar style, containing a small-scale version of the intense festival experience - a sampler featuring two prestigious names as confirmed artists: the enigmatic North American MC and producer DOOM, in Europe for the first time, and the French artist Laurent Garnier. More artists will be announced soon.
A source at Lex just told me this - “we’ve been working with promoters / DOOM etc to make this happen for ages… looking good”.

Still on the contemporary art and design tip, Intercity and Studio55(DSL) are currently organising a series of exhibitions entitled Pic + Mix. The concept revolves around collaboration with an artist hooking up a talent of their own choice with the idea of creating some artistic juxtaposition. The second show kicks off this Thursday, where graff veteran Chu is sharing his pencil case with street artist and illustrator Disco Teck. The duo have decked the walls of Studio55 with a full on installation piece. Check their website for further details.
