RUSTIE – GLASS SWORDS

We should have seen this coming. Ultra Thizz hinted at Rustie’s unashamed, no-holes-barred approach to bass-synth-funk mashing. In that sense, Glass Swords, his debut LP, is nothing short of explosive. …Read More.

SOLE AND THE SKYRIDER BAND X BONAFIDE BEATS #19

Following on from last year’s departure from the label he helped create, Anticon co-founder Sole hasn’t completely left behind the record label’s distinct characteristics in his latest release, and third album alongside the Skyrider Band.

Hello Cruel World is often emotive and ambitious with it’s ideas – recalling the psychedelic rap zeitgeist of cLOUDDEAD’s self titled debut and the acerbic, cerebral rhymes of Sage Francis (a guest on the album) and one time enemy EL-P – and the spacial new wave beats are deftly handled by the Skyrider Band.  …Read More.

LABELS RESPOND TO PIAS WAREHOUSE FIRE

One of the most sorrowful images from the past five nights of violence has perhaps been the destruction of a Sony warehouse used primarily by distribution company PIAS. A storage home for countless independent labels, who for the most part operate on shoestring margins at the best of times, the events stand as a “horrible” setback, in the words of Beggars Banquet (home to 4AD, Rough Trade and XL Recordings) Chairman Martin Mills. …Read More.

KODE 9 AND THE SPACEAPE’S BLACK SUN ARTWORK BY OPTIGRAM

Kode 9's Black Sun artwork by Optigram
As you can tell from reading any issue of Bonafide we salivate like a Pavlov dog over nicely designed and well thought out record cover art – at it’s best the work can almost be a piece of art in itself and emit the same resonance as the music it holds.

One cover that caught my eye recently is for Kode 9 and the Spaceape’s Black Sun LP. Produced by Optigram, the artwork for the Black Sun LP is a dreamy mountainous landscape and seemingly a deft combination of spray paint and digital design. The result is a piece of work that’s a contemporary take on a long lost Hokusai woodcut.

Mount Kimbie
Carbonated EP
Hot Flush

What with the restless and ever-changing soundscape of the underground electronic scene, it comes as no surprise that Mount Kimbie have taken a step back from the all-too illusory world of hype, and given themselves some time before plotting a follow up to their critically lauded LP Crooks and Lovers. This measured approach, something that reveals itself in the music that the duo produces, has culminated in the release of their Carbonated EP. …Read More.

For volume 16 of Bonafide Beats we’re proud to present one of the most exciting and enigmatic new members of the US beat scene, Mexicans with Guns.
