BLU – DOINNOTHIN’ FT. UGOD (PRODUCED BY FLYING LOTUS)

BLU – DOINNOTHIN’ FT. UGOD (PRODUCED BY FLYING LOTUS) from david m. helman on Vimeo.

Blu’s Doinnothin‘ is already a hypnotic beast of a track but David M. Helman and RUFFMERCY, with their graphic freshness (think Blue Note for the beat generation), have only gone and made the track even more of a cranium wrecker. Like a nekkid Alexa Chung rocking just a pair of Nike Vandals, this is some freaky sheeet!

REVIEW: SULLY – CARRIER (KEYSOUND RECORDINGS)

Sully Carrier LP reviewSully
Carrier
Keysound Recordings

As fantastic a resource as itunes is, its genre column tends to be about as vague and misguided as a music review in The Express (see their review of PJ Harvey’s latest album). Nonetheless, after uploading Carrier by Sully into my library, the genre read ‘dubstep/ grime’. This specificity immediately struck me as something of an anomaly for itunes, so it was with these dual genres in mind that I immersed myself into Carrier.

UK HIP-HOP SPECIAL: BONAFIDE MAGAZINE 04

Bonafide issue 04 cover

As usual we’ve raised the stakes and aimed to put out something that you won’t find anywhere else. A UK themed issue from the red and blue colour scheme to the fashion imagery through to the innovative musicians and artists we’ve spoken to, issue 04 celebrates our very own local originators.

Peep the roll call of exclusives. On the music tip we’ve got exclusive features with the bedrock of UK hip-hop. From the grey High Plains of Huddersfield, Jehst and the YNR crew, cover star Klashnekoff reloading for his next saga, the cerebral thoughts of Ty, electronic pioneers Coldcut/Ninja Tune and Daddy Skitz. Also in the mix is the un-definable Jamie Lidell, floating vocals from Fatima, the relentless underground warrior Cappo and Radio 1xtra DJs Benji B, Mista Jam and DJ Target.

On the visual side of things we chat to street artist agent provocateur D*Face, visual storyteller Slinkachu, dope designers Oscar and Ewan, and include illustrations by some of the UK’s finest pencil wielding talent.

Oh yeah, and from across the Pond, the one and only Mutha Fecking Gaslamp Killer drops in for a cup of tea. Cop your copy here or from the usual stockists including TATE, Fopp, Magma, Rough Trade and all good record stores.

REVIEW: SCIENTIST LAUNCHES DUBSTEP INTO OUTER SPACE

Scientist/Various
Scientist Launches Dubstep Into Outer Space
Tectonic

It seems a relatively obvious connection, getting one of dub’s leading pioneers to remix a range of dubstep tracks, and it is certainly the case that Tectonic have made a link that proves intriguing. Dubstep’s debt to the sonic tenacity of its nominal predecessor has been fairly apparent; not only in the music, but also in the rhetoric of individuals such as Kode 9, for whom the concept of music as some form of  mutating viral strain echoes dub’s constant re-framing of its source material. How much of this is apparent in Scientist Launches… is somewhat debatable. …Read More.

Fortified Audio/Boomkat

The success of James Blake suggests that a wider audience are opening up to the broad strokes of electronic music.

For those in the North, Jamie Grind has released his Footwork EP, available on Boomkat as a digital download and soon to be issued as 12” by Fortified Audio, filters the genre of ‘Juke/Footwork’ through the sieve of Grind’s own UK garage and dubstep influences. The result is a lively and energetic EP that strives to pin another Leeds’ flag on electronic/bass music map.

TRICK OR TREAT WITH BRAINFEEDER

flying lotus brainfeeder press shot bonafide magazine

Having spent the past few weeks bolted away pouring over the print proofs of Bonafide issue 04, I thought it time to get some air and get back on the digital wagon.

On this tip, with Halloween approaching, it seemed fitting to do a post on Brainfeeder, a label who quite frankly operate out of another world.

First up check out Flying Lotus’ recent cackling cracking cameo on Annie Macs’ show.

Like all good labels Brainfeeder also have a distinct idea about their visual identity. Artists and agencies involved include musician Teebs with his beautiful record cover collages, illustrator Theo Ellsworth, Paulo Rafael and agency We Are Build who did the f*cking lush art direction (excuse my French) for Los Angeles.

Check out our interview with Flying Lotus in issue 02 and keep your eyes pealed for our feature on the Gaslamp Killer in issue 04.

KIDKANEVIL INTERVIEW – BONAFIDE EXCLUSIVE

Way back in Bonafide 02 we did a feature on one of our favourite producer mans Kidkanevil. It’s been a while but if we could still be arsed to use MySpace, he would be in our top friends for sure. And I’m talking top 8 shit, before it turned jokes. Consistently dope and consistently unpredictable, one of the most genuine and original producers in the UK today. If you haven’t heard his latest album Basho Basho then erm, you really need to. …Read More.
