CARHARTT INSTORE EVENT

The work of  Mark Chiarello caught my eye earlier this year when he was commissioned by streetwear giants Carhartt. Chiarello provided the artwork for their Spring/Summer 2009 campaign, creating some fantastic watercolour and ink rendered illustrations. A little digging and it becomes clear that Chiarello wields a brush at the highest level – he’s only the art director at DC Comics.

He has a brilliant ability for interpreting people - his  John Coltrane portrait on his blog is fantastic – and what I really like about the work is that it gets you thinking how traditional materials can used to be used to create contemporary illustration.

Warming to the Carhartt theme, next Monday the label will be holding a BIG hip-hop event at their London HQ on Neal Street, Covent Garden.  The main draw is Phoenix Da Ice Fire promoting his Baptism Under Fire LP and support comes in the shape of Triple Darkness, The Irs, Cappo (!) and Endemic, all dropping lyrical ruggedness and heavy musical notage. With free drinks by Mean Time Brewery it all sounds like a winner.

Gig details; Monday 7 December, 7.00pm to 9.30pm at Carhartt, 55 Neal Street, Covent Garden.
