Listing the Beacons Festival (August 11-14) line-up makes you sit up and notice (and whistle in awe if you can). A quick taster to wet your appetite goes: DELS, Jamie XX, Mr Scruff, Toddla T, Hudson Mohawke, Andy Votel, Mount Kimbie, Ghostpoet and Jamie Woon (a number of whom can be found right here in Bonafide).
Basically it’s a Who’s Who of the bright young (and old) things of the UK beat/future beat/dubstep/hip-hop/whateverit’strendytocallitthisweek scene. In other words this is some real headz sh!t!
Bonafide Beats #18 sees MFP (MindFullPeace), soon to feature on the new Brownswood compilation, takes his place behind the decks and construct a tight mix that interweaves some of his own tunes in amongst tracks by the likes of Samiyam and Astronote.
The mix begins in silky fashion, courtesy of a Dilla remix of Vlooper, and continues to breeze by, with bleeps, squelches and synths all merging together to create a murky and hypnotic soundscape, moving seamlessly from the hip-hop of Simo Mood & Mood Schula and Elaquent back to the electronic glitches of FLP. Taking its cue from the wonky avant hip-hop that is produced on a regular basis from Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder label, MFP nevertheless brews a fresh and healthy assortment of slo-jam and funk beats that has enough legs to stand together as an assured mix from a soon to break producer.

It is a classic move, the use of a double tautology to signal the requisite capacity for irony required to assume metal’s patently ridiculous iconography. In fact it’s not dissimilar to calling yourself ‘Cash Money’, and shows the mixture of both distance and – pardon the pun – investure required to simultaneously be part of a genre, while also pointing towards its inherently juvenile concerns. A two-piece, who in 2009 garnered some hype as a sort of electronic doom-metal cross-over act with their debut release This Beat is Necrotronic, Necro DeathMort have accrued a degree of coinage as a band that revel in a form of genre transformation.
Pusha T’s debut solo single comes following a number of reputation-bolstering appearances on the work of others, the most notable of which being his vocals on Kayne West’s ‘Runaway’ from last year’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. There’s an understandable amount of anticipation following Pusha’s release, which acts as a preview for his forthcoming EP, due later this year. As one half of Clipse, Pusha’s voice is not an unfamiliar one, and his performance on ‘My God’ more hardened veteran than young buck making his début.
Sam Baker’s Album is Samiyam’s second LP and the first one to be released on Brainfeeder, which is pretty much the label of the moment after putting out records by the likes of Flying Lotus, Tokimonsta, and Austin Peralta.

Making beats since 2005, the funky Frenchman has not only adopted some of the soul-slicing style of Madlib, Dilla and Premo but also their prolific release rate.
