Bonafide set out with the aim to celebrate hip-hop. Our aim was to explore ‘old-school, mid-school and new-school creativity’, five issues on we’re proud to present the old school x new school issue. In hip-hop chronological order we speak to the Godfather of it all, Grandmaster Flash, profile EPMD, the funky Long Island duo from the golden age of rap and get crazy with ‘the lazy hustler’ and fourth Beastie Boy, Ricky Powell. …Read More.

Printout! – Print the North
at the Deaf Institute, Manchester
09 June 2011, 6:30pm till late

And I always come back to the same thing – for the love of print and the inexplicable sensation and satisfaction you feel when all that hard work you’ve spent putting into your latest reveals itself when it arrives back from the printers. …Read More.

The guys from Lopez like their basslines heavy, and maybe even more than that they like them authentic. The Paraguayan born, south London based production trio recently released their debut EP Analogue Excursions on Keep Up! records. If you’ve eBay-ed a synth in the last few years, there’s a good chance it features on this ten track beat trip. …Read More.

We asked rising UK talent Jon Phonics to contribute a themed mix to our Bonafide Beats series and he came back with something he called Drippin Wet. Either Jon was describing the effect the sounds would have on listeners’ ear wax (doubtful) or he was being down right rude (probable).

One of the world’s greatest wordsmiths, Gil Scott-Heron, has died in hospital in NYC, aged 62. Often coined as the Godfather of Rap, a title that he refused to acknowledge – and little wonder given his anti-commercialist sentiments – he preferred instead the term Black American Musician.
A career spanning some forty odd years saw him perform poetry and spoken word, often backed by jazz and blues with a heavy African influence. He published two novels, The Vulture and The Nigger Factory, penning the first of these at the age of 19. …Read More.

Sheffield’s Doc Fest has a strong line up – contributions by the likes of Herzog and Scorsese and features on everything from robot footballers to Ayrton Senna through to errr Justin Bieber. The one that caught my eye though is Michael Rapaport’s Beats Rhymes & Life: The Travels Of A Tribe Called Quest. I might well award myself a tour to the Steel City and check it out.

Once Upon a Time In New York: The Birth of Hip-Hop, Disco and Punk is a rare treat. Full of vintage visuals, archival interviews and great insights into the unique melting pot that was New York in the 70s and early 80s. Set to a killer soundtrack, this is kind of thing the Beeb was devised for.
