Some Cold Rock Stuf (sic) is unbelievably the debut album by Stones Throw recording artist J Rocc, unbelievable because the DJ/Producer has been prolific over the years; co-founding The World Famous Beat Junkies, acting as tour DJ for Madlib, Mos Def, Talib Kweli and J Dilla, as well as releasing countless mix CDs for the likes of Blue Note and Supreme among others. …Read More.
Russian born, London bred Andre Gurov (aka DJ Vadim) needs little introduction; DJ, producer, artist, A&R man and radio presenter. AsBen Eine’s star keeps rising the scale of his street-art seems to keep on getting bigger. Off the back of last year’s deserved surge in interest in his work (in part due to the PMs wife although his back catalogue is surely a more powerful calling card for his artistic talents) he is currently setting up shop at the White Walls Gallery in San Francisco, USA. One of the perks of spending Sundays researching and writing hunched up over your computer is that, from time-to-time, you come across gems that make you think, “This is worth spending my day off doing”. Now admittedly I am v.late to the party with this, but those of you who like to be fashionably late about things (like myself) then keep reading.
Whilst digging deep into the visual side of Brainfeeder, I kept reading about cats repping an LP entitledFrom Artz Unknownproduced by a dude called KanKick. It was referred to with a reverence that marked it out as a piece of mythical West Coast magic that had been snoozed on for far to long. Not only that, its creator was an elusive, vinyl addicted maverick with form: friends with Madlib at school, a member of the Lootpack and the Funk Farm. Having bumped From Artz Unknown and listened to the excellent and freely available downloads from 03 and 06 on BTS Radio I can now say I am in the know.
In the early hours of yesterday morning Nate Dogg (real name Nathaniel Dwayne Hale) passed away due to complications arising from two strokes he had suffered in recent years. Nate Dogg was a seminal figure from the G funk era, a fine rapper in his own right and a stone-cold hit maker on the hook, yet another sad premature death for hip-hop. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends.
Paul White’s paintings of broken cars and graffed up trucks caught my eye recently. Technically these pieces are superb but it’s the composition and subtle details that really make these aging automobile bangers into great pieces of art.
More of Paul’s work can be seen in the flesh at his Auto Abandon show at Melbourne’s Metro Gallery and – for those not in Oz – at his website.
A month barely passes without a Raekwon related post rounds these parts, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx Part II was a straight up banger sitting high among the 00s’ best rap albums and the early signs suggest Rae is onto another winner with Shaolin Vs Wu-Tang. …Read More.
