Fresh from carbonite, the next mix in the Bonafide Beats series is certified vintage, having been in storage since Prince was partying in 1999. Washing up on the silicon shores of Luke Vibert’s hard drive some ten or more years since it was made, this mix captures the vibrancy of underground hip-hop on the cusp of the new millennium. …Read More.
Last year Metabeats and Associated Minds passed us this excellent bumpin mix. Fast forward 12 months and Metabeats is back like the Candyman, cherry picking some of hip-hops more dark moments and brewing some next dimension digital sizzle.
The past few years have been good ones for African music. While the likes of Damon Albarn and Vampire Weekend have led a new wave of interest in incorporating African rhythms and sounds into indie and rock, Madlib’s third installment in his twelve part Medicine show series showed that hip-hop artists have also started to look to Africa for beat making inspiration. …Read More.
Having spent the past few weeks bolted away pouring over the print proofs of Bonafide issue 04, I thought it time to get some air and get back on the digital wagon.
On this tip, with Halloween approaching, it seemed fitting to do a post on Brainfeeder, a label who quite frankly operate out of another world.
First up check out Flying Lotus’ recent cackling cracking cameo on Annie Macs’ show.
Like all good labels Brainfeeder also have a distinct idea about their visual identity. Artists and agencies involved include musician Teebs with his beautiful record cover collages, illustrator Theo Ellsworth, Paulo Rafael and agency We Are Build who did the f*cking lush art direction (excuse my French) for Los Angeles.
Check out our interview with Flying Lotus in issue 02 and keep your eyes pealed for our feature on the Gaslamp Killer in issue 04.
Bonafide favourite Kidkanevil recently dropped a new video for Yokai a track off his Basho Basho LP. As ever its pretty different to the usual promo fare and in this case is best described as bananas!
Also worth a mention is that recent Ninja Tune signings Stateless (KidK’s other musical passion) will be releasing their first single for the label this November. Big tings!
Gaslamp Killer is perhaps best known for his work on Gonjasufi’s 2010 debut album, A Sufi and a Killer, as well as his extraordinarily eclectic mixes, some of which are available through the Brainfeeder website as podcasts. The Death Gate EP is the latest of a series of largely instrumental EPs that have marked the LA-based DJ/producer’s growing stature.
Only a few days left on this beauty but well worth a post. DJ Shadow drops in to play unheard gems and long-lost vinyl classics with fellow digging fiend Gilles Peterson.
The opening two tracks are worth the license fee alone. Superb stuff as you would expect from individuals who between them own zillions of pieces of vinyl.
