Polish artist M-City’s work is currently being shown at the Carmichael Gallery. Wielding a spray can, scalpel and cardboard, M-City’s work is, like Logan Hicks’ output, about the method; the images are built up from complex, overlayed stencils that reveal images built within images. For his visuals think Sim City meets Lego meets a frustrated town planner with a spraycan. Recurring themes include ballooning tower-blocks and industrial cities painted on to walls and exude an energy fit for an urban space.
Running between July 10 – August 7, 2010, the show includes new canvases, a site-specific gallery installation and outdoor mural project.

As the dust settles on what must have been one of the more surreal hours of Team Bonafide’s summer so far, we’d like to share with you one of the most goddarn funky-fresh mixes to grace the audiosphere this side of Uranus. Milk ‘n’ Anchovies was commissioned especially for the recent Nike Tied Together event, aimed at promoting Nike’s collaboration with (Product) Red to help end AIDS in Africa. 24 one-hour mixes were put together by the 24 teams repping London in the global event, and collectively hosted on a microsite via the dope folk over at Mixcloud.
As the World Cup draws to an end and England fans, empty Stella bottle in hand, ruminate where it all went wrong for Don Fab and his crew (possibly picking the same team that’s failed time and time again didn’t help) it’s all too easy to think that the sound of Africa is merely a colourful vuvuzela. With this in mind Friday Funk comes from the heart of Soweto in the shape of Strut’sNext Stop Soweto excellent series.
Vol 1. is entitled Next Stop…Soweto Vo1. Township Sounds from the Gold Age of Mbaqangwa and can be sampled for free here. Vol 2 goes deeper into the underground dusting off obscure crates off Soultown, R&B, Funk and Psych Sounds from the Townships. Magic.
Italian street-art general Blu has released another one of his jaw-dropping wall-painted animation videos. Entitled Big Bang Big Boom, it’s Blu’s take on evolution and it’s consequences. Take five and soak in some next level visual dopeness.
Bread and Butter, Berlin, the place to go and find next years threads and lifestyle must haves, is now in full swing. Palladium Boots are bringing the noise live and direct through a dedicated radio stream. Featuring the likes of Elijan and Skilliam and one man music taste-making machine Alex Nut (Eglo Records, Rinse FM etc. etc), it’s well worth a listen.
We recently caught up with YNR’s beat monster Jon Phonic chatting about his excellent Half Past Calm 2 album, UK hip-hop and his approach to making music. Jon has kind of flipped things a bit with his new release. Working with the Delusionists, Digital Connects doffs a cap to all those keyboard warriors bashing out critical coverage of the hip-hop scene and takes its inspiration from the GZA’s classic Labels joint. Big props for the shout out!
Bug (of Jus Like Music) has been mad busy these past few months. Fresh from dropping a superfly installment of our Bonafide Beats series, he then delivered this aural hot potato for UK hip-hop record label BBEs mixtape competition over at that mighty music cloud in the sky (aka Mixcloud). Cooling off somewhat he then put together some laid-back rhythms for Monday Jazz. Nice.
