FREE MP3: LORN – CHERRY MOON

Lorn - Cherry Moon

Lorn is the only member of the Brainfeeder family not have come from nor ever lived in LA, and an absence of the blazing sunshine that is typical of the state is quite noticeable in the young producers music which is deep, dark and Dario Argento-style cinematic. You can listen to the track below and download it here.

SELECTOR CUSHIONS

Typo Graphical is an excellent place to bookmark. It provides an insight into the contemporary international scene (hell they featured us recently) and is run by the multi-talented John Hall; John wrote for Mass Appeal back-in-the-day and divides his time between contributing for crack Oz mag T-World, developing Typo Graphical and growing his reggae influenced lifestyle brand Selector. Featured are the latest set of Selector cushions. Thinking about it I can’t think of a more fitting item to be inspired by Jamaica’s laid back sounds.

JON PHONICS – BONAFIDE EXCLUSIVE

Jon Phonics Half Past Calm 2

Bonafide caught up with YNR Beat monster Jon Phonics immediately after the release of his brand new LP  Half Past Calm 2 on YNR – who happen to be giving the album away to co-incide with the launch of their dope new website: ynr-productions.co.uk. You can also head over to their shop and grab 1 of 300 Limited Edition CD’s with hand-printed 4-ply booklet and inlay/poster courtesy of Brixton Basement Press.

Jon Phonics is one of the most promising producers in the UK hip-hop scene right now and the quality of the beats speak for themselves. If you don’t believe us, you can download most of them yourself for the ridiculously low price of bugger all. It’s almost criminal. …Read More.

SKI BEATZ’S 24 HOUR KARATE SCHOOL MIXTAPE

Like a 1 inch punch set to land, 24 Hour Karate School promised to create a massive impact. The question is where is the expectant KO?

Much delayed, the Ski Beatz project had the hype-sphere drooling like Pavlov dogs over a crack MC team involving Mos Def, Jay Electronica, The Cool Kids and Jean Grae, and dope teasers such as the trailer above  (although I’m not sure what the delectable Sienna Miller is doing there either). However, the expectation was that this would drop at the end of March…and yet it still isn’t anywhere to be seen and in the anticipation stakes has been surpassed by the Nas x Marley Distant Relatives vehicle. It’s left those of us looking forward to this release yelling, “Where my MC ninja’s at?”

Has creative producer Damon Dash dropped the ball? Will the mix ever see the light of day? Do any of the cats involved rap and do a karate chop at the same time?

MADLIB MEDICINE SHOW 05: THE HISTORY OF THE LOOP-DIGGA

Speaking of super-fresh project’s, Madlib’s Medicine Show 05 features a comic devoted to fictional, early-90s-era gangsta MC, Rapper X. Written and illustrated by Benjamin Marra of Traditional Comics, Stones Throw dryly comment: “The comic is so over-the-top in it’s extreme violence, it is likely only to appeal to immature audiences, and almost certainly serves no social purpose – perfect for Madlib Medicine Show.”

JIMMY MOULD X SCUBA

Jimmy was responsible for the excellent Dam Funk shoot in issue 03 of Bonafide and was recently commissioned by techno influenced dub-step pioneer Scuba to produce the cover art for his new album, Triangulation.  Read more about the concept after the jump and you catch an interview with Scuba over at the nascent electronic dance site Hybridlife here. …Read More.

COMPETITION CLOSED: HEXSTATIC – TRAILER TRAX GOODIES

Hexstatic (aka Stuart Warren Hill and Robin Brunson) can quite rightly be described as DJ pioneers. Their love of experimentation has seen them re-evaluating the potential of technology for the past 25 years, delivering diverse electronic albums (with dope artwork to boot), jaw dropping live shows and collaborating with technology manufacturer Pioneer on the DVJ-X1 professional DVD player.

Hexstatic return this May with the LP Trailer Trax. You can get a taster for the new material here, the snippet demonstrating their ability to press the right buttons visually and aurally. Trailer Trax looks like another exciting direction and you can catch the new live show, alongside Bonafide issue 01 favourite DJ Woody, on 13th May at Cargo.

Thanks to Soundcrash we’ve got a pair of tickets, a copy of the new LP and a t-shirt (to wear and cover in sweat at the gig if you so wish) up for grabs.

To enter drop us an e-mail at mailbox@bonafidezine.com and answer the following question. What power source (that would be handy if you wanted to play reckords and visuals and the like) do you associate with static?

Entries close at 5pm on the 11th with the lucky winner being notified on the 12th. Please make sure you can go before entering people.

PUT A DONK ON IT!.. ON SECOND THOUGHTS, PLEASE DON’T…REALLY.

Props to VBS  correspondent Jamie Hedgeson for journeying into the heart of Lancashire to meet loads of chavs and document the latest bassline craze…Donk. Seriously, this must have been some hard work and he somehow managed to keep a straight face throughout. He also did it without breaking down in tears and pouring acid into his ears so he didn’t have to listen to any more rubbish raps and euro pop-inspired sped up beats.

Oh the first 5-10 mins may seem a bit tame but it gets better the more you watch. Or worse, I’m not sure which.
