Always been massive fans of the Best Joined Up nights, the heady mix of art, beats and booze is difficult to beat for a night out. The new sessions at the Faversham will be running now on the last Friday of every month. Kicking off on the 29th of January, The Pern, Sune, Woman 158, Curse 273, DJ Format, Zero 7 (DJ set), Bullion and more will be in full effect.
Lowriders got in contact earlier this week regarding the launch of their new mixtape series. Following an agenda to promote the dark and sometimes underbelly of beat making ,whether it be hip-hop, dupstep, crunk, wonky or skweee (this is a new one for me) it’s all about stretching boundaries and pre-conceptions. Coco Bryce’s effort lives up to the template and is a nice introduction to another world of music appreciation.
Yes you read it right folks, the metal faced maverick of rap is set to return to our fair isles (he was born here, you should know this) for his first ever European show. The performance takes place as part of ‘A Taste Of Sonar’ at Camdens Roundhouse on the 5th & 6th March alongside Laurent Garnier and other guests (tbc), in a taster of the seminal Catalonia based electronic music festival, Sonar.
Details are a little sketchy at this stage but here’s the official statement from Sonar press…
On 5th and 6th March, Sonar will offer a new “Taste of Sonar” at the Roundhouse in Camden, in London.
It will be two nights to savour in pure Sonar style, containing a small-scale version of the intense festival experience – a sampler featuring two prestigious names as confirmed artists: the enigmatic North American MC and producer DOOM, in Europe for the first time, and the French artist Laurent Garnier. More artists will be announced soon.
A source at Lex just told me this – “we’ve been working with promoters / DOOM etc to make this happen for ages… looking good”.
I’ve been a big fan of Italian artist Ericailcane since I purchased one of his prints a few years ago. Working in a number of different media including etching, sculpture and watercolours, Eric the Dog is also quite happy to work on huge-mutha-walls too. His pieces feature characters inspired by fairy tales and folklore. True to the genre the beasties are weird, macabre and boast a devilish sense of humour. Like the animal he’s named after, Ericailcane’s work has bite!
Anyone wanting to check out his work should head over to Brighton’s Prescription Art Gallery, where Ericailcane has joined up with Run Dem, Cat Johnston and Andy Doig for the exhibition Bara Volante (Flying Coffin). It looks well worth a visit.
Or It’s Your Mum Remix Vol. 3, as I like to think of it being referred to in UK schools. NYC hipster hip-hop DJ’s and party animals (judging by their photo albums) The Rub have been cranking out excellent remixes, mash-ups and mixes for a long time now, and their latest in the series is now available for zero dollars on their website. Worth downloading if only to listen to the Kool Keith vs Switch Papa Large track. Go on, treat yourself!
Came across this at the terrifyingly good Its Nice That. It appears to be an archive of old-school flyers. Scrolling through the visuals, and there are a lot, is a bit like entering a different era. The flyers are basically a historical documentation of the birth of hip-hop. Also, from a design point of view, this gold in terms of inspiration. Likewise, if you are looking for an authentic old-school moniker visit this site!
What started as a post inspired by a piece on Certified Banger snowballed into something that probably requires several posts. Time is precious at the moment so to hell with it. First up is the Scor-zay-zee The Starterdownload, an offering that re-affirms the confident delivery and wit and perceptive lyrics evident when he released Great Britain. Its great to hear his Nottingham burr back on the mic and the highlights of The Starter are his ability to poke fun at mainstream rap and his imaginative re-working of The Message. Hopefully the attention he’s been receiving over the past six months will provide the motivation to release the great album that lurks within him.
When investigating The Starter I didn’t expect was to click through to a site that houses lots of free Nottingham based music. Not only is Scorz featured but compadres Tempa, Lee Ramsey and C-Mone et al are all on board. Anyone who used to buy the superb Big Daddy/Grand Slam magazine will be aware of their talent. For more information it’s worth checking the Son Records label too.
BTW Certified Banger is also promoting the latest installment of his On The Radar series and also helped make Bonafide issue 03, providing an excellent interview with Farma G from Task Force. Props.
Edan’s new release Echo Party is a toe tapping exploration of discarded and long forgotten disco, breaks, rap and fuzzy distortion mixed in with live instrumentation. As you would expect it’s both crazy mad and bad, as in good. This promo for the snippet release demonstrates that the Humble Magnificent operates on another level.
