OLD-SCHOOL MEETS NEW-SCHOOL @ MAKEAMIXA.COM

usb_mixtape

A rather more realistic addition for the Christmas list this time.

Produced across the way in Manchester, Make A Mixa has a genuinely creative approach to using a USB. The techy bit of kit is inserted into a tape and then (the exciting bit) you can design your own sleeve/label for your tape and make it look like you damn well please. For any 80s to mid 90s kids who spent hours crafting their own tape and its personalised packaging (I hold my hand up for spending hours scrawling infective 3D graffiti styles to go with tapes that reflected my, shall we naive, enjoyment of music) this should hit the nostalgia spot. Even more interesting are the limited edition versions with outstanding artist/illustrator Matt Sewell and underground legend Devin the Dude both getting involved. Cheeeckiiiiit it out.

JUST ADDED TO OUR CHRISTMAS LIST, THE KRINK 8-LITRE APPLICATOR

krink

The Pern unfortunately didn’t get chance to use one of these on Monday. Although the lady herself referred to this type of ink as being ‘dirty’, the results on the Krink website makes us think that next year we’d like to have a play with some serious heavy duty spray artillery.

WIN A TRIP TO NEW YORK COURTESY OF RED BULL REPORTER

Win tickets to NYC

The days of Red Bull only being recognized as manufacturer of saccharine energy drinks is as distant a memory as paid for music and newspapers. Their current business portfolio includes four football teams, two Formula One racing teams and a hockey side amongst others, although this may echo of a certain cartoon mouse’s aspirations their musical collaborations have always been interesting. Including the Red Bull music academy and its endeavour to see fledging producers gain first hand (and uncontrived) support from the professionals in a series of workshops across the globe.

And a recent initiative is the Red Bull reporter, which focuses on our own fair island in an effort to unearth writers, photographers, filmmakers and presenters to cover key cultural assignments which includes next weeks B-Boys Championships in New York. Click here for more details.

FRIDAY FUNK. INTRODUCING MR CHOP

mr_chop

Friday funk is this week inspired by Mr Chop. His Lightworlds release introduced me to his rich, luxurious electronic funk. What inspired this post though is his forthcoming For Pete’s Sake LP which sees him take his analogue scalpel and rework some of Pete Rock’s greatest beats.

Released through the mysterious Five Day Weekend label, launched with releases from Peanut Butter Wolf and Edan and seemingly managed by someone playing the musical equivalent of Fantasy Football, For Pete’s Sake comes out on the 7th December and should be on any headz Christmas list. Seriously, if you enjoyed the El Michels Affair’s Enter the 37th Chamber LP then you will appreciate this. The intense reconstruction of T.R.O.Y is worth the admission price alone.
