DJ HERO: ALL THIS SCRATCHING IS MAKING ME ITCH

DJ Shadow x DJ Hero

After lank haired indie and rawk kids got the chance to advance their air guitar skills via Guitar Hero, now comes the turn of the wannabe bedroom superstar DJ to hone frenzied hand movements. Cleverly utilizing a whole heap of technology that I will never be able to understand, Activision’s DJ Hero release comes with a nifty turntable and mixer that allows you to mix, beat juggle and scratch along to vast array of exclusive pre-prepared sets. With names such as DJ Shadow, Z-Trip, Jazzy Jeff and Grandmaster Flash lending their musical ears and talent to the project, DJ Hero will be un-escapable this A/W and is likely to have high priority on Christmas lists.  Sure to inspire a new generation of mash-up artists and annoy parents in equal measure. We can’t wait.

ACROSS THE PENNINE WAY AND DEEP INTO THE UNDERGROUND

gas_lamp_killer_image

Manchester based Agent J has been big supporter of Bonafide so it’s high time we returned the favour. Through his Groovement site he has spent the past few years bagging interviews with local, national and international heads and curating a vault of top-notch podcasts. Demonstrating a work ethic that a Trojan would be proud of, Agent J’s shows are well worth checking and are full of sharp repartee with a wide range of articulate and opinionated artists. Highlights include Fly Lo discussing the relevant qualities of Batman and Watchmen, Paul White and his very own X-Files case and listening to the Mutha Fooking Gaslamp Killers grave [sic gravel] inflections; for anyone unaware of the Killers deranged musical philosophy head to the Brainfeeder site for a free introduction to his beautifully twisted world.

On the subject of Manchester, Urbis are currently preparing for big tings. Home Grown – The Story of UK Hip-Hop, runs from October 15 2009 – March 2010 and traces the origins and development of the global phenomenon of hip-hop from a purely British perspective. With the right support and exposure this show could provide the UK scene with a much needed shot in the arm. Book it in your diary.
