RECORD SLEEVE DESIGN GOODNESS

bluenote

At Bonafide we love dope design. In particular we get sweaty palms about design work for music purposes. It was great then, to see an art exhibition cover the subject in such depth. The Gallery @ The Civic in Barnsley, Revolutions: From Gatefold To Download, tackles how designers respond, creatively, conceptually and laterally, to their brief. We give the gallery two thumbs up for putting on a great show and showing some of the bigger public galleries outside of London how to curate an exhibition that students and creative professionals will respond to.

EVERYBODY WANTS TO BE AN MC

phoenix

Week after week we post some mind bending hip-hop celebrity news. Many will be aware of Joaquin Phoenix’s recent decision to quit acting to pursue hip-hop ambitions.

The performance suggests that a Def Jam contract hasn’t been forthcoming, however more revealing is Casey Afflecks deadpan response in clip one. This suggests that someone’s pulling wool (sic. beards) over our eyes and there’s an echo of the great Bill Murray’s claim that he was ditching films to play in the NBA. This got me thinking about others in the public eye who’ve dabbled in spitting rhymes. Recent attempts include the footballer formally known as Andy Cole, an effort that sadly doesn’t live up to the title billing. There is also Fulham FC’s / MC Clint ‘Deuce’ Dempsey – props for the artistic re-invention of a football pitch as a ghetto backdrop. Anyway, the 30 minutes spent researching this had me pining for the Golden Age of part-time rappers. John Barnes, the OG of the amateur profession. Recognise.

MADE IN QUEENS DOCUMENTARY

madeinqueens

Last summer in a rented garage on the outskirts of Queens, NY, something incredible was happening. A group of imaginative tinkerers from Trinidad were working late into the nights creating something nobody had ever seen before: enormous stereo systems jury rigged onto ordinary BMX bikes. Traveling together, each behind the handlebars of his or her own massive homemade creation, they treat the neighborhood to an outrageous impromptu music and dance party on wheels. This is some crazy shit. Serious.

COOKIN’ WITH COOLIO

coolio

Seemingly paving the way for the inevitable Raekwon high concept vehicle, Coolio steals a lead and becomes the first MC to re-imagine himself as a ghetto chef. With his regulation sunglasses and pin up girl helpers, not since Floyd has there been a more genuinely maverick cook on our screens.

R KELLY TRAPPED IN THE CLOSET

rkelly

Naked ambition, taught drama, post-modern storytelling, visceral acting, screenwriting vision… R Kelly may have got his wings clipped doing bird but as this timeless, legendary epic shows the man’s genius as he reinvents urban opera. With lines such as ‘Next thing you know a call comes through on my cell phone / I try my best to put it on vibrate / But from the way I could tell it was too late / the power of the piece is jaw droppingly undeniable. I am not quite sure how many episodes exist but like the Wire I am sure it goes out on top of it’s game.
